do some research people. schweitzer is proposing clean coal technology. this pumps the co2 a mile back into earth. this c02 could also be sold. there are laws in place in montana as far as land restoration after mining. you've severely underestimated montanans if you think they'll let these mining companies ruin their land again. this isn't a complete solution to our energy problems, this is a short term solution that aims? to give us a energy independence and a bridge to 100% renewable energy.

Come on Schweitzer, PLEASE DON'T SELL OUT TO BIG COAL!!! Thats what this is leading up to! The reason why petroleum use? decreased in the 1970s after OPEC was 2 fold-government rationing of oil and LARGE SCALE INFRASTRUCTURAL SWITCH TO FILTHY DIRTY COAL.

(continued) The solution to the energy/climate problem must be GLOBAL, we cannot progress if we are unable to think beyond the immediate benefits to the nation state. From what I have seen, national energy security rhetoric in the end? always ends up being about how and why we should embrace coal, the most polluting and destructive (even if commercially profitable and productively functional in the short term) fossil fuel in the history of mankind.

I love this? man's charisma but seriously, how can you talk about national energy security without talking about the social and environmental consequences of fossil fuel use. Please do not allow Montana to become another whore state to the coal industry. I know those reserves are tempting...please do not go the coal route...we are still paying for that mistake today when it first made in the 1970s.
