Hemp is illegal because of the combined effort of William Randolph Hearst, Andrew Mellon, and the DuPont family. Hearst owned timber, Mellon was? heavily invested in DuPont, and DuPont had a big stake in man-made fibers. Hemp would have reduced the value of all their investments, as it is a much more renewable source of fibers from which to make paper and fabric. Hearst practiced his usual brand of "yellow journalism" that pushed the gullible public into embracing wars and bad legislation.

@duesiswild True, but how much do you honestly think the US would need? One person working a hemp farm would be able to replace 20 guys on a lumber operation, and it'd be a lot less labor incentive, cause get this; weed... is a weed. You don't need to tend to it that much. That's without considering that hemp can replace more? than just lumber.

@ItalianJoker92? It wouldn't end jobs, would just modify the raw materials used in all of those jobs. In actuality it would create more jobs, as growing and cultivating hemp is seasonal and ongoing.

We're already in a hole as far as the economy goes. The smart thing to do would be to legalize it. But the roght? thing is to keep it as it is. I'm all for legalizing it... but the cost would be much too heavy...

The main reason it's? illegal is because it's extremely useful, and easy to make. The lumber industry would go out of business too. Hemp is a lot stronger and cheaper. I understand the whole "fear issue" but the gov is an ass hole for making it illegal. But look at it this way: legalizing hemp would drive so many people out of jobs.
